WITNESS recently trained human rights defenders in the occupied territory of Western Sahara to use video more effectively as a tool for change. Often referred to as the last colony in Africa, Western Sahara has been occupied by its neighbor to the north, Morocco, for the past 40 years. Since then, the Sahrawi people have been subject to violence, oppression, and a complete media blockade.

As media activist Amhed Etanjji put it, WITNESS’ crucial support is helping Sahrawis "break the [information] blockade from within”.

Viacom partnered with WITNESS, an organization that trains and supports people using video as a tool for social change. As part of the partnership, Viacom created custom spots focused on its brands' existing initiatives and encouraging audiences to "Find your voice. Tell your story. Change the world." Created and produced by Viacom Velocity, the campaign calls audiences to "Witness the Power of Story" by making bystanders and passersby witnesses to change through public projections around New York City. This is a behind-the-scenes look at the collaboration between Viacom and WITNESS and a glimpse into how Velocity made this huge-scale concept into a living, breathing reality. Under the umbrella of our Defection Programming, Invisible Children has recently launched its latest project, Community Defection Committees or ‘CDC’s’. This project was designed in partnership with the organization Discover the Journey (DTJ) and local NGOs across DRC, CAR, and South Sudan. These committees are being established in communities that are amongst those most affected by LRA violence and will provide an avenue for international, regional, and local actors to collaborate on efforts to mitigate the LRA conflict.

THE INCIDENT: Sometime between mid-April and early May the LRA attacked a small, 100 person village called Kawousa, 37km east of the Kotto River and 45km northeast of Bakouma in the Central African Republic. This is the furthest west an LRA attack has ever been reported and the first time this population had made contact with the armed group.
